ERNIE MACMILLAN spends four years as personal assistant to Headmistress Vector, where he quickly gains a reputation for being fiercely protective of all students, and highly intolerant of bullying of any kind. He and Linus share a flat at Hogsmeade for a time, and remain fast friends in the coming years. After his tenure at Hogwarts, he trains as a Healer and takes over his father's country practice. He has a few awkward relationships that go nowhere (including a handful of painful dates with Lavender Brown), and he ends up marrying Queenie Greengrass. They divorce after five years of childless marriage. She remarries, he does not. He serves on the Hogwarts Board of Governors, and leads a quiet and uneventful life in the country. He coordinates the Remembrance Day programme for the Battle of Hogwarts every year, and goes to Hogwarts once a month to personally maintain the memorial on the grounds for the rest of his days.

I mean, we'd talked a few times after the Battle, and it was awkward as anything, and I thought

I guess I had time to sort out what he did and why last term, and come to terms with the fact that even though I hated him at the time, it wasn't for the reasons I thought, and it's not like I ever sat down and talked to him about that part, because, you know, we'd have the time for it later.

And I don't know whether he forgave me. For not

For not doing an awful lot of things. To start.

And I guess now I won't ever really know because he's dead. Gone out in a duel with bloody Bellatrix Lestrange and Dolohov because he's a god damn hero, and it's not like I'll ever get to tell him what I really think of him now that I know what he's done.

Bugger.

I fucking hate funerals.

Private Message to All Current Occupants of Hogwarts

This is an announcement regarding facility use of Hogwarts as we transition to the new term and beyond.

Hogwarts is scheduled to re-open to students on September 1, and letters have been sent to all eligible students. We are in an ongoing process to fill a handful of remaining staff and Board positions, but are confident that our new term can begin on schedule with a qualified selection of professors.

This will no doubt be a challenging term. We will have far too many empty places in the Great Hall, and quite a few new students of a variety of ages who will be transferring to Hogwarts who will need to be appropriately placed. We are working diligently to ensure that all students who attend Hogwarts will be in a safe environment, regardless of blood status, political differences, and personal history.

Any rising fifth, sixth, and seventh year students who are currently at Hogwarts will of course be welcome to remain at Hogwarts over the weekend. During this time, if you so wish, you can help with the last of the immediately necessary repairs to our facilities, and can have a hand in the programming we're enacting to help us all start off the new term on the right foot.

We would also like to take this time to assure all students that they have a home at Hogwarts for as long as they need it, and are prepared to house students over summer holidays if that should be necessary.

The Transitional Government of Albion will be temporarily housed at Malfoy Manor, and as of now, we anticipate any personnel and materials associated with the Transitional Government will be fully moved to that location by Friday evening. Those students who have vital work with the government of Albion are welcome to come and go from Hogwarts over the next few days if you wish to be housed here, or can temporarily be housed at the Government headquarters -- we are assured by Albion representatives that there is adequate room at the Manor for such purposes.

We look to this coming term as a chance to collectively heal, to prepare our students for a rapidly changing world, and to look to the future with hope.

We've finalised our schedule for the remainder of the summer, and would like to run the details by you -- specifically, the most time sensitive of the lot is our proposed timeline and security plan for the memorial and service week we've planned for students and families. We also would like to work out the timeline for preparation for student arrival at the start of term to facilitate the smoothest possible transition and give the Government of Albion time to make arrangements for alternative facilities.

Would either of you or a suitable representative be available for a meeting in the next week? It should take no longer than an hour or two.

Lastly, the Headmistress will be interviewing for staff positions. Do you require a list of candidates for security purposes? If so, please do let me know.

Well

It's hard to describe what it's been like here.

There's no end of things to do, seems like. And tonnes of people who stuck around. I mean, I'm not the only one. Others've shown up for the youth programme thing too. And it hasn't been easy, but it wasn't what I thought it would be.

Sort of the story of my life, right?

I've sort of given up on being surprised about things. Like how Granger's in charge of all the potions, and there are Muggles here at Hogwarts working on the government stuff, like, planning what it's going to be like, and there are all these kids who went to a secret school run by the Longbottoms, and that I now know how Sirius Black takes his breakfast in the morning, and every now and then I'll hear conversations where people will be absolutely dead serious about how to extend diplomatic relations to merpeople, and it's mad sometimes, but it actually makes sense for the most part. Because Granger's actually really brill at Potions, I heard Slughorn talking about how she's an utter prodigy or something (he's here, by the way), and I guess once you wrap your brain around stuff like that, the rest sort of falls into place.

Anyways.

I think you should come up. Lend a hand with the potions stuff. Yeah, I know, but I think it'd help some. With how you've been doing lately. And there's people from your class here, too.

I'm sorry I haven't been back home.

And yeah. I've had trouble sleeping too.

At least when I'm awake, I feel less useless than I did a few weeks back, though.

I don't particularly care for what Cavanaugh has done with the greenhouses. They're all fussy now. I know she's the expert on 'ornamental' gardening, but she likes to pretend growing plants isn't dirty or something. And she's always rearranging things. So they look better, I guess. Which means it's hard to find anything. Next time we go in there, I'll bet you a knut there'll be a topiary. Or she'll have put ribbons on something.

Finch-Fletchley is still pretending like everything's normal. I think he's well gotten the message by now, but he is rather good at being excessively polite. After several days of investigation, I believe I have a few promising leads on the recent feather and soup debacles. I know that discipline matters in times like these, and it is quite important to properly discourage acts that would have a much harsher consequence outside of these halls. I respect your position, sir, and I want to do what's best for our school, and not let a few malcontents ruin it for the rest of us.

I know you're a busy man, and I understand if you don't have the time to meet. But I did want you to know that I was following up on recent incidents, and that there are many loyal Prefects besides just myself that want to maintain order and honour at Hogwarts.

First there's the soup, then the bookmarks, then the Great Hall gets filled with feathers.

The soup and feathers are definitely connected. They're both cheeky, and require advanced charms and access. How on earth did they manage to do the spellwork in broad daylight? Unless whoever it was managed it get the elves to deliver them somehow. But the Friar hasn't seen any unusual activity around the kitchens, and claimed the house elves were utterly clueless about the soup.

The plot thickens.

And what sort of thing are we supposed to remember involving feathers? Or was it just to defy the Headmaster? At least he didn't look too fussed.

This is getting ridiculous.

And with the stuff that's been going on in New London and Ireland, it's not a joke. I saw 'Remember Sirius Black' in the bottom of my soup bowl on Sunday, and I know I'm not the only one.

The Headmaster and Professor Desai need our support. This has to stop. Besides. If they ask Patil and Finnigan to pick out people again, we know it won't have anything to do with who actually is responsible, and some of ours are going to get hurt in the process.

I won't stand around and wait for Moon to actually do his job at keeping order.

We need a list of suspects.

It looked like NEWT level charms work. And they might have familiarity with the house elves and the kitchens. Any Gryffindor you can remember who looked particularly well-fed back in 5th year? Known to have passed out food and the like? We shouldn't eliminate the other houses, of course, but they're the most likely.

This has the Weasley twins written all over it. If they were still around, it'd be obvious.

I thought they might've given their younger siblings the idea, but Ron and Ginny aren't as reckless by half. Ron's trying to get on Desai's good side, and he was knackered all weekend from going out in the field. And Ginny isn't advanced enough, and she's a Prefect, not a rabble rouser. Even if they are both Gryffindors.
